What Does “Be A Rockstar” Mean To You?

I’d love to hear your opinion in the comments. It’s such a vague phrase so casually bandied about, and so open to a variety of interpretations by everyone.

It is useful, perhaps, for one to say it to oneself while peering at oneself in the mirror in the morning as a means of self-motivation on difficult days. If it escapes the mirror and creeps into your discourse, you have possibly gone off the rails. If you use it un-ironically, there is a serious problem.

Of course it is a vague phrase; it is a phrase about not being held to any rigorous standard other than popularity. We already have phrases for being held to rigorous and empirical standards.

  • I like this very much: “it is a phrase about not being held to any rigorous standard other than popularity”

Why social media “rockstar”? Why malign the word that means so much to rockers as to define a high class performer, singer, frontman, guitar player or drummer? They are the actual rockstars! Why not some other term to define a very popular, appreciated & entertaining social media writer whatever. Social Media star! or Whatever. Why steal the name rockstar?

  • I hear you there. I dislike rockstar, and also dislike the terms guru, maven, expert…. they all have little meaning in this application
